Aces and Wolf Man Jack..
Another Spring 73 wake of the Flood gem.
Big Picture:
Here Comes Sunshine in Second Set
Expanded jam on WRS
Topic-Donna Jean
First- listen to DJG harmonies on the sweet side of the Rio Grand
Second-very next tune , Loretta Lynn style DJG on 'Race is on'.
To my ear- to appreciate this era--- invest in the backing vocals.
Sub Topic -Backing Vocals
You have 4 potential backing vocalists per song.
Sometimes the person singing lead -also sings back-up
and the songs change texture -depending on who is singing.
Pretty sure that Phil had a set routine of which songs
he was singing back-up vocals on- which was a lot of the tunes.
Some of my favorites: Jack Straw, Mexicali, Truckin',Eyes
and some IKYR- (this night is one of them.)
Then Donna- I can't figure out when she is going to sing;.
There are some givens like PITB, Greatest, Woman enough
but really she seems to be on stage rather at random.
During Europe 72 she seemed limited to just a few tunes especially PITB but here in 1973 she is on stage a lot.
Her part in EYES should not be underestimated
that Chorus BHT/SES has everybody in
and it seems to me like Donna keeps that glued together.
Set 1
The first set is not jam laden (except PITB)
but it sure features outstanding versions of tour standards.
It is almost as if by this point all the new material has been fully incorporated into the rotation.
funny I talk a lot about Big River
but at the same time Mexicali
is also a great workhorse in 73.
This show has a certain x-factor
that is not easy to pick out just from the set list.
Listening to Phil & Donna & Bobby harmonize on Box of Rain.
And if were talking harmonies
Row Jimmy the line between Garcia and Donna
is mellow indeed.
"the line between us is so thin
you might as well be me"
( I am pretty sure Phil is in there too but not at all points.)
SEEMS A COMMON WAY TO GO..
Harmonies on BIODTL
Bobby singing lead
Donna as a Counterpoint
Phil strongly with backing vocals
BE WOMAN- Hard to tell who is backing Jerry here
probably Weir, Phil maybe Donna?
Jerry's voice is so smooth he grabs all my attention!!!
El Paso- always like to hear Jerry
egging Bobby on back to El Paso
It is all good all the way to the Playin'
second night in a row for Don't Ease.
PITB-the jam starts heavy in the Phil Zone.
Set 2
"Light up for the Grateful Dead"-WMJ
Ramble on-Gets the wolf man bump
Big River-always ready to roll in 73
HCS, Greatest- talking about aces back to back
Donna is so rowdy on G-SET
Candyman-wonder if Garcia still thinking about
that DJG meltdown.
Me & My Uncle-the outlaw Bob Weir
He's Gone> Truckin'
There a little loose on the
' Nothing gonna bring him back' harmonies
the positive side of that is not as heavy as previous versions
since the death of Pig
The Truckin' surely the ultimate indicator
of how the band was clicking
and this version is steady.
the Fatness of the Second Set
is a little outside the standard Dark Star
or Other One route
>WRS prelude & jam>Wharf Rat
and the WRS prelude is a work in progress
something most bands would not venture out of the studio
until it was squeaky clean and out on vinyl.
all fragile heading for Wharf Rat
Me & Bobby> Eyes>Morning Dew
The mellow 'Janis side' of Weir>
Eyes>Dew as the finale
Both climax of the night in 73
and OMSN curtain call
This is another one of those great sound
good vibes shows*****
almost 10 years since this show was last reviewed.
almost 50 years since it happened.
What a Long Strange Trip it's Been..
"Love One Another"...

Streaming the show
When You stream the show by pressing stream, the show will automatically be downloaded to your computer in a M3u file. Just go to downloads and it should be there. The file will be protected though,so I've found it hard to put it on my ipod via Itunes, but you can burn it onto a disc or put it on a flash drive.

CandyMan o Man
Wow, I love 73, this band was put togther right all year, and this show is a reminder of it.
magic here is found after wrs, after the first 2 minutes of the music-less lyrics rendition, jerry keith phil and an uptempo billy space it out for 6 more minutes. this is a one of a kind moment that steals the cake at least for the month of march, enroute to probubly the best rat i've heard. The madness bubbles over at about the
3:37 mark.
73 is full of these little moments that if you search you will find a chest full of treasures. check out the pitb from the 28th, the jam into stand alone rider from the 31st, the runaway sunshine from april 2nd, quite a week.

Reach out and Grab Ya..
I don't know why but this page has a depth of sound that seems to be missing from the other copy of this concert..and its a terrific one! I thought I might have been there(guess it was the other Civic Center show)but this one is better..great list of songs. Is that Donna? Shes' right on the harmonies, and Jerry Garcias' vocals are deep and clear. Wharf Rat, Candyman, just incredible..

Not bad
The recording quality is better than average. 4 of 5. What is annoying is all the tuning in between songs is found at the beginning of a song, not the end of the previous one. So when you listen to, say Jack Straw, you have to wait 45 seconds through the tuning to hear the song.
The tuning should have been cut to be on the end of the previous song.
On second thought, not worth the download. The tuning is at the beginning of each song, and that is incredibly annoying.

Might be a 5,but it keeps skipping songs:(
I don't know if they've reconfigured the archive or what, but I can't even stream a whole show. I'm getting every other song, which turns into a real drag when you get to the jam and it cuts ahead to the next tune, or like Weather Report Suite you just get the intro and then it cuts ahead. I'm no tech head, so maybe I'm hittin the wrong button on the stream, but somethin tells me somethin is up.

Re:
I thought this show was overrated when I first heard it. I was wrong, the jam into Wharf Rat (after the WRS section) is a thing of beauty, a touch of exotica that recalls perhaps the 9/21/72 "Star," which had Middle Eastern overtones.

Great sound, the boys rocked B-more again 6 months after the legendary 9-17-72 show. The Playin on this one is a highlight for the month.
Wolfman Jack comes out and introduces them before the second set, and they go right into Ramble On Rose...
awesome!

4 stars on setlist alone.
The show will download in order. However, the first two songs of the night are mis-titled. BIODTL and BE Women are actually Promised Land and 1/2 Step and are in the proper order. Just misnamed. Will review at length latter. The sound is good too, though, from the 6 first set songs I've heard. Doubt this will go down to 3 stars.
